Literature: The Romantic Period and the Victorian Age in British Literature
This course examines a range of works of British literature, from the start of the Romantic Period to the end of the Victorian Era. Through online lectures, class discussions, presentations on theoretical approaches to literary works, and essay assignments, we will familiarize ourselves with the rich literary texts of these periods. This course will pay close attention to the development of new literary forms, including the rise of the novel and the development of genres such as the Gothic and detective fiction. We will also delve into the worldviews and innovations that marked the different literary periods, as well as consider the literature of slavery and abolition.

Jennifer Lodine-Chaffey is Assistant Professor of Literature at Montana State University Billings. She is the author of A Weak Woman in a Strong Battle: Women and Public Execution in Early Modern England (University of Alabama, 2022) as well as articles and book chapters about the works of William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Emily Bronte, John Milton, and others. She has taught at MSUB for four years and holds a Ph.D. in Early Modern Literature from Washington State University. At present, she is working on a monograph that explores the generic conventions and messages of early modern English murder pamphlets.
