The fee for this course is for 2 graduate credits. This course covers the Japanese American incarceration, the mistreatment of Native Americans and other episodes in which marginalized people were mistreated in the region with the approval of the federal and local governments. Beginning with the stories of the first immigrants from Japan, the workshop will take participants through the Pearl Harbor attack and wartime hysteria that followed, to the incarceration, and eventually to the apology and redress payments by the Federal Government in 1988. Teachers will be guided in developing dynamic place-based lessons using primary and secondary source materials such as digitized artifacts, oral histories, and newspapers.

Learning Objectives:
In this class, students will:
1. Evaluate primary and secondary sources leading to, during and after the incarceration of Japanese Americans.
2. Analyze the mistreatment of Japanese Americans during WW2, Native Americans and Immigrants in the American West.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in the history of Heart Mountain.
4. Demonstrate an awareness of competing interpretations of events from different cultural perspectives.

Procedures
Each student will be required to fully participate in all the events for the National Endowment for the Humanities workshop "Echos of History: Mistreatment and Incarceration in the American West." Students will be required to read all the "suggested readings" as provided on the website and submit reflections.
Students with disabilities
Students with disabilities needing academic accommodations should register with and
provide documentation to the Disability Support Services (DSS) and bring a letter to me
from DSS indicating what academic accommodations are needed. This should be done in the
first week of class. This syllabus and other course materials can be modified as needed.
